Deaddiction Protocol

Tobacco Cessation program Conducted by Sangeeta Darvekar Charitable Trust Under the project “Tobacco Kills”

  • Session 1 - Day 1

    • Family viewing of DVD “Tobacco Kills”. If in case you do not have the DVD you can show photographs. But family involvement is very important.
    • Q and A
    • Concerns to be answered if any.
    • Debate. You be pro tobacco and make the patient anti tobacco and start debate. If there is a big group, you can divide the group in two and one group is pro tobacco and one is anti tobacco. Continue this game for 15 minutes.
    • Anonymity guaranteed
    • Ask patient how they will quit?
    • Help the patient to chalk out a plan. This makes the patient responsible as it is his plan.
    • Caution him about difficulties and hurdles.

    Session2 - After 1 week

    • Review
    • If the patient has quit review every month for first six months. If unable to quit then,
    • Offer help, if the patient finds it difficult to quit
    • Behavioral therapy and Yoga if needed.

    Session 3 - After 3 weeks from day 1

    • Review
    • If the patient has quit review every month for six months. If unable to quit then,
    • Offer help, if the patient finds it difficult to quit
    • Introduce NRT/pharmacotherapy if needed.
    • If the patient is put on pharmacotherapy then review every week for 6 weeks, and then every month for 6 months.

    3 pronged strategy that should be employed during counseling.

    • Counseling the family of the patient along with the patient
    • Teaching ways to control the urge by way of altered habits( Drinking water, keeping sugar free chewing gums etc) and Yoga
    • In cases where it is really difficult for the individual then starting on Nicotine replacement therapy
